Book Club…” Caste”  by Isabel Wilkerson

Facilitated by Suzanne Parker

AntiRacist.Jubilee.Symposia proudly announces its first book club/discussion group, “CASTE,” by Isabel Wilkerson.

“America is an old house. We can never declare the work over. […] When you live in an old house, you may not want to go into the basement after a storm to see what the rains have wrought…..Choose not to look, however, at your peril. The owner of an old house knows that whatever you are ignoring will never go away. Whatever is lurking will fester whether you choose to look or not. Ignorance is no protection from the consequences of inaction.”

“Suzanne Parker is a graduate of Spelman College, and holds a Bachelor’s in English and  Middle School teacher certification.

She holds a Master’s in Urban Teacher Leadership from Georgia State University.  She has been a middle school teacher for 25 years. Suzanne has been an active member of MoveOn for over a year. She is active in her church community and involved in congregational care outreach ministry. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, crocheting, and gardening. Suzanne has been married for 27 years, and is the mother of three young adults.”

“With our current ruptures, it is not enough to not be racist or sexist. Our times call for being pro-African-American, pro-woman, pro-Latino, pro-Asian, pro-indigenous, pro-humanity in all its manifestations. In our era, it is not enough to be tolerant. You tolerate mosquitoes in the summer, a rattle in an engine, and the gray slush that collects at the crosswalk in winter. You tolerate what you would rather not deal with and wish would disappear. It is no honor to be tolerated. Every spiritual tradition says to love your neighbor as yourself, not tolerate them. —”
